I actually didn’t know script writer Mary Yugure. So I have doubted what kind of stage that novel would be. actually staging of Ninagawa was so lambent but it was really good script. he must write this novel influenced by Nelson Algren who wrote Kim Novak and Frank Sinatra starring movie The Man with the Golden Arm. Algren came to Japan and went to Nakayama racecourse with Terayama….curbstone metaphysical philosophy that Terayama created with base on biology of curbstone dwellers alternate between hope and despair is perfectly working, before all Shinji Shinjuku, a boxer from hoodlum and Kenji Barikan, stammer boxer from barber shop, process of friendship of 2 comes to big core of the play, this crystallize by little and little making noise. this because 2 starss of Jun Matsumoto as Shinji Shinjuku and Keisuke Koide as Barican bite into the role at full power and answers imperative of script book more than enough, their accomplishment made this play touching. the last scene of Shinji and Barikan’s fight scene in the ring risking their life was so vigorous ever. crystallization of friendship of 2 and death of Barican by this devastating fight makes shine the stage and audiences… all standing ovation of full house… usually theater critic never stand, HitomiHagio-san and Yoshio Ohsawa-san (critics) also stranded. Tuneo Kawamura-san (theater critic) blog < critic of Ah Wild Field at Saitama fine arts theater> long novel of Shuji Terayama who was poet and movie director, and script by Mary Yugure. writer and stage director are charming. but leading role are big 2 stars such as Jun Matsumoto and Keisuke Koide. theater faraway from the center of city was full house. the stage is 1960’s Shunjuku, around Kabuki-cho. 2 young guys passionate their adolescence with boxing, depict their friendship and tragedy of reprobate Shiji Shinjuku and stammer Kenji Barikan. Ninagawa used cluster of red neon sign “record” “Turkish bath” dead words by now as a back ground, stimulate audiences with tango and Enka, and solicit Showa era’s love hotel city where prostitutes live, and he is good at using young popular actors. Matsumoto lets rip energy with full of confident from within, refreshing and cool. Koide creates the role carefully in contrast with Shinji introversives and anthropophobia young guy. Shinji could be Terayama’s yearning aspect and Kenji could be Terayama himself. and staging to bolster the image of Terayama world displaying Terayama poet at both sides of stage is good. This works well, then deadly combat of Matsumoto and Koide in the ring is spectacular. then the ring became lonely wild field. in the end Ninagawa brings back the era to present. the loneliness of young guy that Terayama depicted never changed. 3h15 min including interval. I didn’t feel this long. Hana Kuroki who steals money of Shinju, Masanobu Katsumura as coach, Kenichi Ishii as president of supermarket performed very well. watched on 10/29. Tatsuhiko Ishi-san blog <shining beauty itself….> shining beauty that hardly can be seen existed in front of my eyes for instant. I realized so. I watched the play at Sainokuni Saitama fine arts theater. original: Shuji Terayama, Ah Wild Field Script: Mary Yugure,(actually this is hidden writer, but this could be the person you might know) stage: Yukio Ninagawa. that was curtain fall started lead by prelude of Lohengrin act 1. it was long scene of boxing match by 2 leading role. ShujiTerayama as revolutionary poet as Rambaud was, it was ultimate poet that he could not write with letters…. that poet came into existence as a pitifully beautiful moment in the fake ring on the stage by strong staging of Ninagawa that no one can make and body of 2 young guys who answered well to his staging (Jun Matsumoto and Keisuke Koide) .Is there any audience who never get overwhelmed this scene, touched, full of tear? that time audiences of full house including me watched most beautiful “living poet” in the world. the script book that Shuji Terayama has just written was transformed passionate lively world that is stunned by talented people leading by Yukio Ninagawa, staffs and casts. it was so outstanding. I have no way just to be impressed. middle of play it seemed script progress had sense of slow, but full of blood completely melancholy and dirty world transforms to holy beautiful world in the end. this is “must to watch”.alter ego of 2 that has positive and negative side of Terayama, in the end, he could not be both of 2, but he must want to be both. Jun Matsumoto and Keisuke Koide who act 2 young guys. both are really wonderful. casts are thoroughly guarded. I make a definitive statement this is play must-watch.
