Translation: Yes? No?
Aug. 12th, 2005 11:17 pmやっとできた!*祝う* (笑)
*our reflection
tomorrow runs into today
it will definitely come around
so project(1) your heart
exchange unchanging vows to the wind
rush to your dream...
far passing expectations, reality is very tough
the days that merely repeat over and over seem to suffocatingly bury you
no matter how straight you think you can follow the road
there are dead ends, detours, and times when you lose your way
Yes? No? On a journey where i've lost my way
I believed in my heart...
*our reflection
tomorrow runs into today
it will definitely come around
so project(1) your heart
exchange unchanging vows to the wind
rush to your dream...
If your pride is tiring you, you should throw it away
If you are at the brink of lying, you should keep your mouth shut
Can I do it? Can I do it?
Believe in your dream...
our reflections
tomorrow runs into today
it will definately come around,
so project your heart
even wordless emotions can be shown(2)
release the light(3)
Yo check my flow
The wind that came from yonder flutters strands of your hair
I will climb over any wall to be with you
Yes? (yes) No? (no)
Everyday, on reflection*
Add to it this def soul (def soul)*
Let's go!!
Shining mind...it'll be all right even if the footprints disappear
Even if if i am soaked in the rain, the way is in my heart...
Away...I laughed. Without forgetting that one place,
I go forward to the tomorrow that you hope for.
As most of you know, I love the shit out of this song, so i finally translated it! Yayyy! This song is a little more, well a LOT more abstract than Natsu no Namae. The extended metaphor of this song is comparing various things (your heart, time, etc.) to a movie projector. Notice words like "reflection" and "project" which all have to do with the japanese word 映る.
Now, it sounds kinda weird to "reflect" your heart, therefore
(1)(2)(3) all have to do with this word and what Arashi means by "show" and "project" is by making your heart/emotions into a movie projector by "releasing the light" to show what you're really made out of/your real intentions.
Now, since they got sassy in this song and decided to use english quips, I put asterisks by the areas in english where they decided to use babelfish. Lol, just joking, i understand those boys aren't exactly TOEFL experts, but I applaud Sho's rap again, despite the weird english to japanaese and back again moments because again, the translation really doesn't give justice to the sheer beauty of his ability to create a solid image out of a few words. Kudos, Sho, no wonder you got into Keio. Now, if anyone can explain what "Def soul" is to me, i'd be much obliged.
I think I may want to make this at least a biweekly thing, because it'll keep me not lazy and believe me if i didn't force myself to look up crazy vocab like "detour" I would just write off my understanding of songs as "i got the gist of it" and leave it at that. Besides, translating makes me finally really understand what Sho is rapping most of the time, hahahah. Someone needs to work on her listening comprehension!! Anyway, is this translation every two weeks a good idea? I'm thinking of starting a separate journal for it because it'll somehow make it feel more "official" but i balk at the idea of having to sign into lj more than once (again, I told you i was lazy).
At any rate, enjoy the song! I think I may do either Lai Lai Lai or Subarashiki Sekai next....tell me what you think.

Date: 2005-08-13 01:42 am (UTC)I think some other girl did the romanji for the entire ONE album and posted it in one of the communities. I usually don't work with romanji during translation so :/ but yeah, i think her name is warumono_yum.
i think i will, because it kicks ass.

Date: 2005-08-13 01:46 am (UTC)the thing about arashi is that they usually dont have cheesy bubblegum pop lyrics. i guess the whole nature of the japanese language put into music usually doesn't give too much room for dorkiness (well, i say that but there's actually quite a few bands that do dumb lyrics >_>).
I'll do subarashiki sekai right after lai lai lai, or maybe both at once because i'm crazy like that

Date: 2005-08-13 02:58 am (UTC)I'd love to see either Lai-Lai-Lai or SS, really, but SS in particular because I just have this FEELING like the lyrics are going to be semi-retarded maybe. >_> It's an odd premonition.
Just one question though: does "Lai-Lai-Lai" actually MEAN anything? Or is it just random sound like "la la la" or "doo doo doo" or "whoa whoa whoa~" etc?

Date: 2005-08-13 12:41 pm (UTC)From what I gather from my cursory listening to SS, I feel like it's going to be one of those AWWWWWWWWW!!! songs, and that Lai Lai Lai will be one of those "HOT!" songs. hahaha
Yeah, Lai-Lai-Lai is basically la la la.
