Hi everyone,
I recently just watched a performance of Nice Na Kokoroiki (CDTV 2002.4.13) and Aiba was sitting in a chair the whole time. I know he has had some health problems such as the collapsing lung, and having his appendix removed and I was wondering if that was why Aiba was in the chair the whole time. I was also wondering around when did Aiba get these health problems if anybody knows cause I can't find any specific information anywhere.

Onegaishimasu!

I dunno if his health was bad around that time, but the reason his lung collapsed is most likely because he has a small ribcage and is fairly tall for a Japanese man. And that condition is common in tall, slender men.

As for his appendix... well, that can happen to anyone. Humans don't need appendixes at all, so it's common for things to go wrong with it. Mine exploded! :O

According to the Japanese wiki, Aiba was hospitalized on 3/25/02 for the collapsed lung. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but it was around that timeframe. So that's why Aiba is sitting down in that particular performance. He had to have surgery to fix his lung problem, so he probably wasn't allowed to do too much physical activity for a while. I've never heard about the appendix thing, but I'm not surprised since it's a fairly common thing.

yah, his condition is called 'pneumothorax'... he had to gain weight in order to prevent anything like that happening again. he collapsed during a rehearsal for "Nice na Kokoroiki"... so yah. also because of that, he had to stop playing saxophone (as seen in the "All or Nothing" DVD)

reiterating what the others said :P

he was born with 'pneumothorax' and was always going to the hospital for check-ups. it was his right lung that was weak and it wasnt really life-threatening till he collapse.

the surgery he got should have prevented his from having anymore serious problems. just that he shouldnt strain himself too hard in exercise, playing the sax, and smoking

just further elaborating on what i know and from what everyone else said...

....pneumothorax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumothorax) is just the medical term for "collapsed lung." You aren't born with it, it just happens spontaneously or because of an infection or injury. The surgery he got was more than likely the insertion of a tube that reinflates the lung. It's not a preventative measure, it's an immediate treatment to heal the lung.

Sigh it pained me to see Aiba like that. It was such a difficult period for him...
But at least Aiba-chan came back in action with his tension higher than ever! Haha!

the moment he starts complaining about his chest hurting in the All or Nothing DVD playing the saxophone is the moment his lung collapsed. Matsujun says that that evening, Aiba decided to go to hospital because his lung was hurting so much. There he was diagnosed with pneumothorax, and had an operation and was hospitalized.
He talks about the scar from this operation in his letter to Arashi members in 2004 24hr tv.
