I wasn't sure what to pick because I've never actually thought about it, but they seem like two close friends who just do what they do naturally. Rather than doing it for the fans or because they're romantically involved with each other (though they could be, absolutely xD) it's more like it's just fun for them to do what they do. So I picked the mutually-attracted one.

But the smokescreen one, I was so tempted to pick it...

I put the smokescreen one there mostly for lulz, but partly b/c I know there's a pretty big faction of ppl who believe that Jun is the gayest of them all XD

Let me dust off my little tinhat here...
Self-proclaimed "hetero lifemates" do come around every now and then, but 10+ years of gay chicken seems to imply to me that there might be a little something more under the surface, even if (most likely) neither of them really thinks much of it. I don't envision fifty-year-old Ohmiya telling us all "yep, you were right!", but I do believe that their drunk dialing is probably a little more honest than they realize. So, yeah, I picked "mutually attracted" but I'd like to tack on "and unaware."

...I was pretty tempted to go for the Matsujun answer, though XD

I don't envision a sudden "coming out" anytime in the future, either. It just doesn't seem like Arashi's (or JE's) style.

i don't know. sometimes, their moments just seem to happen on its own without much planning.

sometimes i find them funny, it's like they enjoy fucking with other members' minds, and keeping the fans confused and guessing...

sometimes, i have to say i find them freaky, especially when they go overboard. this speaks more about the cultural differences; where i come from, straight guys don't do most of the things they do. i'm not saying my way of thinking is correct, far from it. i'd like to think i'm open-minded but hmmm, i guess, i'm not as open-minded and as worldly as i like myself to be.

there's this discussion in a news community about why they like news the best. i scanned it (obviously i have nothing much to do and am bored out of my mind) and there's a comment about how news is not overly sparkly and overly gay. ohmiya came immediately to mind because they do tend to be overly gay sometimes. depending on the person, ohmiya can be really weird sometimes.

The part about NewS is interesting, actually!

It supports the idea that anything a group has going for it, can just as easily be something against it. So in this case, I suppose there are just as many people repelled by Arashi's gayness just as there are people attracted by it.

Well, that's the beauty of having lots of different JE groups to pick from, I guess!~

Plus Ohmiya is weird to their own groupmates half the time, so it's nice that we're not alone ^^

There is nothing that could distract anyone from MatsuJun's raging homosexuality.

I didn't vote because I don't really have an opinion. I enjoy Ohmiya as a pairing in the fandom sense (i.e. reading fanfiction, laughing at their antics, having silly icons of their lurve, etc). I don't feel the need to put deeper thought into the true meaning behind it all. The only thing I would tend to say it's not is a sales tactic. Most of the Ohmiya moments happen in concerts, Arashi's late night shows, and Johnny's-centric magazines. Those are things really only people who are already fans are going to be looking at/going to. Hamming it up as a joke or to keep things interesting is one thing, but it's not really going to sell Arashi any new CDs/DVDs/etc XD

In my opinion, I'd say that even at concerts/late-night shows/etc, there is always the potential to hook new fans. Cuz people do drag their non-fan friends to concerts and make them watch shows, etc.

I was Ohmiya-baited after watching the Happiness PV, and though I was previously into other JE groups, up until then I had had zero interest in Arashi. Nothing moved me. I watched Jun's dramas, listened to their songs, watched the odd show here or there. Still nothing. It wasn't until I got to the Ohmiya part in the Happiness PV that I sat up and said "Hello, what's this?"

So for me, I guess, it was a *very* good thing they decided to include that XD

i think there is just not one answer to this..i think its a combination of all except the matsujun and figment of imagination...

i also think that this is their way to make things lively so they enjoy their work when it gets too tiring...and so they wont get bored on doing the same things over and over...ex. although you love a song singing it all the time makes it less enjoyable ne?

this is the secret of arashi..that is why they are still enjoying themselves even after 10 years...

In my mind, I think I shuffled that into the Practical Joke Camp, because Nino mostly does practical jokes when he's bored, heh.

you should have done ticky boxes instead of one choice and once choice only, because i think ohmiya is a bunch of these things.

i picked two because they remind me exactly of my guy friends, who find nothing funnier than pretending to be gay for each other. they wrap their arms around each other, stare lustfully into each other's eyes, pretend to kiss, they think it's hilarious. julietbunny up there called it gay chicken, and it's exactly what it is: they like to be as outrageous as they can until one of them gets so grossed out they have to stop. for the record, i have a relationship not unlike that with one of my female friends, and it's the same thing, a joke. we have convinced another friend of ours three or four times now that we're dating. each time she is horrified. each time my friend and i can just not stop ourselves from being as ridiculous as possible.

but it's other things, too. it does drive sales and garner attention and it's silly to pretend that it doesn't. i am sure there is some calculation to it. it's their job to give the fans what they want. so, one, too.

also, i have noticed that they can get a little gayer whenever girlfriend rumors start making the rounds. this is smart on their part. it distracts the fans. it's damage control. so, three, too.

and sometimes -- i don't get this vibe from ohno, but i do from nino, in his sharpness and sourness -- i think there are feelings there. it is impossible to state with any authority what nino really thinks and feels, but he betrays a kind of possessiveness and sullenness that makes me suspect sometimes that his feelings might be at least a little confused. i recognize that what i'm reading here might also be just interference from the alien signals i intercept with my tin hat. i feel a little stupid even committing it to comment form. but there it is: maybe a little bit of four, two.

the only ones up there that i don't see at all are five and seven: i don't personally see any evidence that they're lovers, and in fact ohno seems to actually be politely squeamish about the actual, practical idea of two guys getting it on. and seven, what? lol. how can you not believe in ohmiya? whether or not you prefer to overlook the groping and ear caressing, ohmiya is real. they have costumes. they have their own song. not believing in ohmiya is kind of like not believing in tackey and tsubasa.

I thought about doing the ticky thing, but then I don't think that would give me as accurate a report on the fandom demographic where Ohmiya is concerned. This way, where people pick the most biggest (loudest? most obvious?) reason to them, I get a sharper picture. (And I can easily count the # of ppl who participated XD)

There probably is more than one reason, but I picked the one that I thought started the whole business in the first place. ^__^ (Which is #2)

I know what you mean about guy friends. I have a few who pretend to be a love triangle just for kicks. This is what makes me disbelieve the idea that Ohmiya is actually romantically involved-- because I know all too well how easily it can be faked for fun.

Along the way, the reasons probably changed, evolved, did whatever it has, but I think at the bottom of it, the reason that's NEVER changed is the fact that it's fun for them. Otherwise I think they would've stopped a long time ago XD

#7... was actually nspired by the Hate Meme that went around awhile ago. There were people there saying that they saw NO Ohmiya, which was a bit of an eye-opener for me too. But then again, I know plenty of people who don't believe in things that I find perfectly obvious, so it's not like I won't acknowledge people like that. (And give them their own box to tick ^_^)

I picked No 4 because I could, but I do think it's probably a bit of everything between 1 and 4 (...or 1 and 5? Though I tend to think that, rather than having altuistic motives of distracting from MatsuJun, Nino found, to his delight, that this was an area Jun was good at that he could still exceed him in ;P). I'm going with the opinion that I saw stated in a book about female writers in the 19th century and say that every very close friendship always contains a speck of mutual attraction. (It covers things so nicely. XD)

True, Nino doesn't give off the altruistic vibe... Nino's more the sort of person who'd exploit someone's weakness to its fullest, most damaging extent, in any way he could, (often to the point where it goes from damaging to simply hilarious) so I don't see him being this generous.

I think on any given day, the answer to the Ohmiya question can change depending on their mood or what their managers tell them, but there is always that "longevity" factor that has made it last this long. Personally I picked #2, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has run the gamut from 1-6 ^__^

i was going to pick #1, but...

See, JE advocates member-ai. Heck, the juniors are trained to write love letters to their peers every few shokuras. JE wants these boys to be as straightly gay as possible, because it sells.
Then again, Nino and Ohno can go gallivant around with all the other members of arashi (and they do) but in the end Ohmiya is the biggest pairing.

And all this ohmiya isn't really needed. Didn't they say that JE disapproves of their Ohmiya SK skit?

Plus, Nino's a pretty bleh-i-don't-care-you type of person. But he just gets so sickly sweet with Ohno.

But I don't believe they're lovers. And Nino's just the type to screw with his fans (i believe he [and arashi] are actually scared and disgustedly amazed at all the crazy obsessed fangirls anyway) so I chose option #2. XD

Having seen Nino's tactics in the past to get fans to "kyaa~" and mess with the members (Nino Arashi..!) and other fans, I put the Ohmiya idea all on him (besides he tends to be the one to instigate Ohmiya-ness most of the time). But then again, Captain isn't as innocent as he looks either so no doubt he's into it as much as Nino.
