Religion is, in general, a fairly personal thing in Japan; and especially with celebrities and idols, it's not the sort of thing that's flaunted out in the open.

Though to be fair, that's just my understanding of it, since I don't recall any Johnny's idol mentioning what God they worship; though they do participate in Shinto and Buddhist rituals and so on.

well my best bet would be that they grew up following Shinto like most Japanese and follow Buddhism rituals too..just like what cacti lover said...

Didn't we see them in AAA japan, korea, thailand dvd (if I remember it correctly they were in taiwan concert '06 I think) they were putting incense...I guess for protection during the concerts...

In my opinion, I think Arashi like most people believe in God...but if religion per se as we know it..that would be my bet..as the official religion...

They did, but said somewhere that it was a tradition attached to the concert hall/country, not their choice at all.

Agreeing with [livejournal.com profile] aeslis about the rest.

Most Japanese people, when you ask them, will say they have no religion. Shinto and Buddhism are so woven into their culture that it's an automatic thing to do the rituals, like praying at shrines, without really thinking about them in a religious manner the way most would.

It's pretty unusual for a Japanese person to be Christian or any other religion, though a surprising amount of Jehovah's witnesses come to my door...

i read somewhere that christianity is also seen as kind of like a "popular" thing these days in japan which might explain why a lot of the johnny's boys wear crosses and stuff. it doesnt necessarily mean that they are christian. i generally dont really think there's a lot of awareness of religions either. a lot of japanese people have weddings in churches but funerals in shinto temples, which i think is really interesting!

haha! This is like,

Born a shinto, Marry a christian and die a buddist. XD

1st tradition, 2nd is 'cos it's 'popular' to marry like in western style, and the last is 'cos buddist recarnates or something? I can't really rmb.

So they have a really mixed lifestyle, but if i'd you, i'd just take it that they're free thinkers. (:

Yea. I think its something like this.

When I went to Japan for a hol last year, the tour guide mentioned something like that.

Reading this post made me realise that religion really isnt as open as it is in the west. Scientology anyone? Lol.

Haha well, can't be helped, It's tradition yo. XD I guess it's like, culture to them? Maybe kinda disrespectful to their parents/elders too if they don't follow it, specially since some of them are 1st sons. ..I believe. Eh... yup all the arashi members are 1st sons. I'm not too sure if having older sisters count to this kinda thing, but I don't think so. XD I guess in that way, it's alot like chinese culture! Though it may be more strong in japan.

Yea. Thats true. Japanese culture is similar to the Chinese culture in that way, where guys are placed in more importance than the females. And nope, sisters doesnt really count. I experience that first, if not second, hand.

yeah, i second what [livejournal.com profile] aeslis said, i had a japanese penpal who did told me that they don't really practice their religion, so even when they say they are buddhists, the things they do are just part of their culture.

I believe most people in Japan say they are Agnostic.

^ As someone who has lived in Japan before, yes, agnostic is pretty much it. Not many people in Japan actually follow a specific religion and as others have mentioned, they do some shinto/buddhist rituals, but people consider that a part of culture and not religion really.
