If you have a PC, Windows Movie Maker comes standard. It's decent, if limited. I use it, and it's been OK for fanvids for the most part. For Macs, iMovie comes standard.

Besides that, I've worked with Sony Vegas and Final Cut Pro, which are good. Vegas is a little fancier than WMM, but not too hard to figure out. Final Cut is, like the name says, professional level; it's standard software in my university's Film Studies programme, and we are kind of famous for our film department.

So it depends on your money and level of skill. I choose to use Movie Maker, because it's free XD

Additional Notes on Final Cut Pro

Fun fact: "Letters from Iwo Jima" was edited on Final Cut Pro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Cut_Pro#Major_films_edited_with_Final_Cut_Pro), so if you're a Nino fan, there you go. lol.

The only problem with FCP is that it's only available for Macs. But if you do have a Mac, and want to use a relatively advanced software like this, there's also Final Cut Express, which is fine for fanvid makers and less expensive (because it's slightly less fancy).

I haven't used anything outside the four programs I mentioned, so I can't recommend any more :)

Definitely virtualdub is the best program to cut video without losing quality of the video itself. You can pm me if you need help how to do this. Or mr google always there to help. I also learn from him :-)

hope you wouldn't mind...

thanks for posting this inquiry cause I am also in the middle of browsing which video editor to use..cause the last time WMM and Cyberlink pretty much disappointed me (or maybe because my cyberlink is the older version), anyways I hope you wouldn't mind if i ask this also in this thread....

but i want to know if there's a editing software which can make me edit out the subs? like splice the video height to cut out the subs...so if ever i'll make a fanvid i wouldn't have any conflicts with subbers (because sometimes i can't find a good raw vid for it)..cause of course i don't want to put the subs there....

I hope nobody finds this inquiry annoying...thanks!

Sony Vegas can do this ^^
That's what I do with my fanvideos, I just cut the clips slightly higher than the subs that way their not visible :D
and even though I like the cute japanese subtitles they put on the bottom of japanese variety shows, sometimes they don't look to appealing in fanvideos xD so I cut those out too :)
