In the kanji for Arashi, on top there is the kanji for "yama" or mountain. Because Sho and Ohno are oldest, it's like they're on top. So they're "Yama Pair."

As for "Neener" ... It's just a pet name from fans :3

If I remember correctly, there's an episode of MagoMago Arashi where the old lady called Ohno "Sammy" instead of "Satoshi." Since then, he's named his transexual alter ego which you can see in his solo concert "Sammy." :]

Emm.. as for why Nino is called "Neener".. i don't have any idea as well..XD

But for Ohno and Sho to be called the "Yama Pair" is because
the kanji storm, "Arashi" (嵐)is made up of mountain, "Yama" (山)on top of the wind, "Kaze" (風)
so as they are the two oldest in the group, they became the "Yama"
Hope that helps (^^ )

嵐 (Arashi) the kanji word is made up of "Yama" (mountain) and "Kaze" (wind). Since Yama makes up the top part of their name hence Yama Pair as Ohno and Sho are the oldest in the group.

"Kaze" is the bottom half of the Arashi kanji. The younger members are Aiba, Nino and Jun who are collectively known as the Kaze Trio, though not so commonly used.

Gomen I have no answer for the other question.

Hope the above helps.

You're welcome! Arashi is great for learning Japanese and J culture!

Ganbatte! ; )

山 is above 風 and since ohno&sho kun are the oldest amongst all they're like the leaders, as well as above all, therefore they are the "yama(山)" pair.
and neener is the cutest nickname for him, eh! as well as neen :)
it's frequently called by his fans :)
hopeee this helps!

I think "Neener" is used by some foreign fans only.

I have never seen or heard a japanese fan call him that ^^; They usually call them by their names with -san,-kun,-chan added, very respectful.
It's not even possible to write it in japanese...

I personally hate "Neener" & "Neen", sounds like "peen" or "weiner"...

ooh..i have also never heard/read of japanese fans who call him that either...
and..like you said..it does not sound very respectful to call him that..

I forgot to add that, but that's right. Japanese fans don't call him that. However, on the English-speaking end, nobody is doing it out of disrespect or anything, I think ^^;;

I feel like "Neener" originated from Nino accidentally being called "Nemo" somewhere before, but if what [livejournal.com profile] ames_909 says is true, then never mind. :P

i guess that if a fan has always been calling him that or also calls him that..to them it will never sound mean/disrespectful and it will make no sense no matter what anyone says ...but i get what you mean ^_^

agree...

that's what I thought too...British or Aussie's accent
the word 'NO' is pronounced as NER (rolled tongue) or listen to Daniel Radcliffe's accent...hehehe

so for Nino...it's NEENER...i think it's cute though (^_^)v

I personally dislike the "Neen/Neener" nickname, petname, whatever, too. Not because it's disrespectful (unless Nino himself dislike that nickname), but because it sounds childish. It also sounds like an annoying version of 'nin' in 'ninja' and so reminds me of Shingo's movie, NinxNin.

And like you have mentioned, it's similar to the penish="peen" adaptation. But that's just my pet peeve, I don't get why people make up nicknames for nouns so it's 'cutesy'. Like getting pregnant becomes 'preggers' or whatever. =A=;

To be fair, I think the Japanese fans have their share of making up weird nicknames for celebs too.

Neener and Neen were first used by fans here on LJ who didn't like him because it sounds kind of mocking, but the fandom gradually adopted it as a universal pet name for him-- kind of like how lots of people declare themselves Jun-baited and so on nowadays, that also originated from around the same time with the same group of fans. Hope that helps!

Since we're on this topic, does anyone know what are the petnames (if any) for the members commonly used by Japanese fans? I've always wondered how Japanese fandom operates and if they liked the same pairings as us etc.

I call Nino Neener or Neen or the Neen. No idea, it just came to me one day as a pet name. Then I realized that everyone calls him that. xD I kinda got it from his smug attitude. Like when kids stick their tongue out and go 'neener neener neeeneeeer!' xD

LOL at "neener neener neener" because that's what I thought of when I first saw Nino being called that lol. Personally, I like "The Neen" because it sounds funny (yet kind of badass) and matches his snarky attitude, like Fonzie/"The Fonz" on Happy Days XD
