Cyzo, ＜Already overtakes Smap!? Arashi doesn’t stop their power in sales and audience rate!> DVD “5×10 All the BEST！ CLIPS 1999-2009” records 420k initial sales and ranked no1. of Oricon raking. It overtakes 370K sales of “Real Face Film” by Kat-tun released 2006, record first ever No.1 in Oricon history. Music industry people are surprised with their phenomenal initial sales figure. Also current no1 DVD sales of the year is so far “ARASHI AROUND ASIA 2008 in TOKYO”, sold 410K. So this mean initial sale straightly gets no.1 of year. So it must seems they will dominate no.1 & “ of yearly ranking. So far also Single CD they dominate NO.1 &2 and album is no.1. Arashi’s strength which never stops seems, unexpected collateral effect occurred. “Exile and TVXQ released DVD same day. Before releasing the battle in high level by 3 major groups was anticipated. It was more than expected. Exile battled bravely, sold 220K. They hit best sales of their own sales. They couldn’t win by the strength of Arashi. As the booking beyond all expectations, so production didn’t catch up so arrival of goods was delayed.” CD shop staff said. Arashi marks debut 10^th anniversary on 3 Nov. The show helped by Kinki-kid aired 26 October was 16.2% and the show with Erika Toda & Shota Matsuda aired 2 Nov was 14.2%. It is not bad but comparing their peak their popularity begins to decline. The show with Mariko Ishihara that cause problem only 10.7%. This can’t be possible as Smap and a fatal figure. Is possible Arashi will get the position of “national idol” instead of Smap? I want to keep watch Johnny’s agency’s generation transition.

Concerning SMAP, they will remain national idols and Arashi will join them but on different levels. People don't really realize this, but SMAP don't even work together often. They mainly just use the name for promotion nowadays. I believe SMAPxSMAP is the only show they actually still produce together. In comparison, ARASHI are ALWAYS promoting together. How many shows do they have together as a unit??????? That is why they are moving strong. Also its a generation progression. Arashi will be hitting their 30's soon which is also the peak of SMAP. Eventually someone will come out and top Arashi (hopefully it ain't HSJ).

Even if Arashi takes SMAP's spot as national idol, they still have a lot to live up too.

Let me list some:

- Takuya Kimura's super high drama ratings (I believe he has hit the 30% mark)
- SMAP selling over 2 million copies of one single alone.
- Hosting television shows pratically every day as a member (not a group)


The thing holding Arashi back is their relation with Johnny's Entertainment. SMAP has so far been able to sort of break free from stuff like that. It is at a point, where they practically run themselves. SMAP were never at those Johnny's sport events and they never appear at the Countdown, something I'm sure Johnny-san would never let Arashi leave.

I have similar views, Smap's popularity is at the point where I don't even think of them as being a part of Johnny's. I find it interesting that Kimura Takuya is still considered to be one despite his being the most non-Johnny's. In terms of TV, Smap has outgrown the agency and they have truly made it their own, but when it's concert time, they fit back into their Johnny's cookie cutter idol molds. The gap between TV entertainment versus music entertainment is so big. I think that's their one up over Smap, Arashi is changing the rules and boundaries from within, while Smap tries to cut of ties with Johnny's but know that they'll always own them in the end.

it's not like they themselves are aiming to compete or making comparison...
the articles' author just conveniently decide to compare them and wrote such an article...
think of the feelings of arashi's fans...just like their fans think of smap's fans feeling, it's not like they went "Yes! we are overtaking smap" or anything right?

and we all know arashi fans love arashi being together(and arashi themselves love being together too). while smap members prefer to work individually and not as united as arashi...it's not like we can decide for smap to work together on lots of shows

I agree. Since i'm sort of a fan of both, it's hard when people decide to compare them...or should I be happy, since SMAP is so legendary?
In a way, I feel that Arashi isn't quite on par with SMAP yet, since (i think) SMAP seemed to have revoluntinized the definition of idol; they just haven't reached that "legendary" status yet.

On the other hand, arashi's individual talents, imo, seem to be wider, what with ohno being into art, sho being newscaster aiba in variety etc. And their credit in their individual activities and their group activities seem just as strong. But really, I doubt that they actually care about taking over SMAP; they seem content in participating in countdowns, and other johnny's events and respect them for that.

I don't really want them to follow SMAP's path and become Smap no.2 you know,I want them to create... a legend... of their own (...omg...that sounds so ...>.>...but yeah, maybe they can promote world peace and actually make it work or something heh~)

Saying Arashi will outshine Smap because of popularity is really discrediting. I see why some are upset at the article because of that, but I didn't read it in that light and it's unlikely anyway. Both groups won't be on equal footing since Smap is always going to be the senpai group, they've paved a lot of roads for their kohai. It's like saying Shounentai isn't the godfather of Johnny's because they're not as popular as they were in their prime.

That said, I'm ok with both groups being what they are and don't see comparing them as putting them down. Both groups have their strength and weaknesses, and because they're both immensely popular groups from the same agency, it's interesting to see areas where they differ. Clearly they both their own marketing styles, and they both went through paths different from each other to get where they are now. I don't think it's disrespectful to observe such differences and similarities as long as it's not insulting them directly. It's unavoidable that they'll get compared positively and negatively because Arashi's popular is growing. Surely fans can't be blind to that either.

Lets not be agited by the cyzo Article *so far I know most their articles are gossips*, it's only the author opinion to compared them to write such article. Arashi only want their fans be happy, they be a happy place where all Arashian could go. They do not comparing themselves with any groups, also why would we if our idol self do not do it? Like Nino once said...it's a pity that the numbers decided the popularity. If they do not so mind about all the numbers and only want to make us happy, lets that be our reflektion. Let us Arashian be like our Idol-Arashi, a happy, well mannered and gentle group.

I don't see what's wrong with the author's opinion. In fact, I feel happy that he's comparing Arashi to the national idols. It shows that Arashi has made great improvement in terms of their achievement and everyone is taking notice of it. I'm happy for both groups to have such great careers.

It's not about who's on top, but I think it's good to know that Arashi has made its own name and brand without being shadowed by anyone ^^

off course we happy with arashi achievement nowadays but there is no such thing who`s on top,who`s da best, taking crown etc....

As long as Arashi's hard work is bearing fruit, I am happy. They don't really need to replace or surpass anybody. They don't really have to sell the most copies or have high ratings all the time.

I merely chuckle with articles like these. Both groups have expressed their admiration and respect for each other. But clearly some fans, especially non-SMAP and Arashi ones, are extremely defensive over something written by the press so that people will read them.

Imo, most Arashi fans don't welcome any comparison with SMAP. They know pretty well SMAP is to be respected and love it if both groups interact with one another. Well, the impression I'm getting from SMAP fans is that they're protective BUT reasonable.
As an Arashi fan, I try not to think much about it because they will be compared one way or another.
There are fans of other groups asking, "Why Arashi? They aren't really that talented." All the articles comparing the two groups are personal opinion, and primarily written so that people will read them. I don't see the point why some JE fans would go as far as criticizing the group's popularity, musicality, etc., not here in this community but in other places.
Hope this clears things up.

Its only natural for Arashi fans to be protective of them although in my opinion MOST of them are quite reasonable about it. I've seen some SMAP fans getting all high-and-mighty about defending their legend. Every fandom have their share of bat-shit fans including SMAP.
I'm quite surprised at how low-key the celebratory posts about Arashi record breaking achievements these past few days. Just looking at this community alone, everyone is quite calm about it. Even the congratulatory comment count were not that much as usual. Maybe they are numb about it or the fandom is probably in a zen stage XD. As for people questioning their talents, personally, I couldn't care less.

i was a bit nervous since EXILE and tohoshinki were also releasing a DVD the same day as arashi.

yappari, SMAP will always be the golden standard in terms of popularity! and i'm proud that arashi's name is mentioned alongside SMAP's ^_^ i think that alone would humble arashi.

as i have mentioned before, when arashi achieves something, i hope people would view it as arashi's OWN feat. it's not they're trying to be their best because they want to put other people down.

SMAP will always be SMAP. SMAP would always be supported by their fans.
i know this is the same case with arashi. as an arashi fan, i know i would always support them.

so i hope that arashi would be given their own acknowledgment in their work. arashi seriously laughed, seriously cried, seriously worried, seriously lived for the 10 years they're in existence.
i believe they truly deserve to reap the fruits of their hard work.

but SMAP is SMAP and Arashi is Arashi, they have their own characteristics...i think Arashi have been a legend now in Japan considering all the record breakings they have made this year!
But of course it's not the same record/legend as SMAP...they have different kinds of legend, but both are good ^^
Arashi will continue to be Arashi and SMAP will continue to be SMAP
but yay and congratulations for Arashi! :)
