A few questions and Potato 10/09 AibaxSho
Dec. 7th, 2009 02:14 pmI've finally finished the Arashi Potato article I started a million years ago, sorry I've just been really busy which leads into my next thing. For my "Popular Music in Modern Japan" class I have to do a research paper and of course I'm doing it on Arashi! I have some questions I would like you guys to answer and my bribe for you is a translation♥♥ So please rather than leaving a comment in my translation post[which I'd love for you to do anyways], I'd love for you to answer them!! Any length is fine!
[First please state what country you are from]
1. How were you introduced to Arashi?
2. Why do you like Arashi?
3. Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song?
4. What do you like about Arashi's music as a whole? [ex. the beat, the lyrics, their voices...etc]
5. What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing? [love it or don't, why or why not?]
6. How do you feel about Arashi's other talents? [ex. variety shows, dramas, commercials...etc] Do you watch them regularly?
7. What do you think about Arashi's Masculinity?
That's all of the questions, thanks so much. Of course no specific names or usernames will be used in my paper. If for whatever reason you would prefer to reply as anon, then please answer them in my translation journal somewhere. Thank you so much.
And the promised translation:
Again the theme is teamwork and Aiba and Sho talk about going to New York newly debuted, about My Girl and random other things. If you would like to read it GO HERE!!!

Date: 2009-12-07 05:39 am (UTC)1. My friend introduced me to Arashi. She grew up in Japan and she had a couple of their older cd's that she let me listen to. And then later, she happened to see Sakura Sake on Music Station, which she also showed me, and then I got the One album, and that was sort of the beginning. I didn't become a full-blown Arashi fan until Maou, but I sort of followed them for quite a while before then.
2. The easiest answer is that they're funny. Even my brother, who makes fun of me for liking JE, thinks they're funny. No one can deny it. I also like the relationship between the five of them. They're always, always fun to watch. And, um, they're hot. Not that that matters or anything. XD
3. Only on occasion, if there's a certain song I'm wondering about. I've been learning Japanese though, so I tend to sort of pick up what songs are about as I keep listening to them. But if I can't understand any of the song myself, it's hard for me to remember what the lyrics were if I just read a translation.
4. I think what keeps me listening to their music the most is the variety of genres that they cover. I like their upbeat songs the best (like Sakura Sake and Believe), but songs like Beautiful days have a place in my heart too. I like songs that I can sing along to, so that's another part of what I like about their music: even for someone like me who's only somewhat proficient in Japanese, I find their songs easy to sing along with. I tend to not be a big fan of a lot of the b-tracks on their albums though, but I almost always like their singles.
5. I love watching them dance, and some of their dances are pretty cool (and sometimes cute, like Nino's solos for example), but let's face it, the only one of them who's really a good dancer is Ohno. ^_^;; Like, if you compare Arashi's dancing ability with a kpop group like Tohoshinki, there's no comparison. They all are decent enough dancers (they have been doing this for ten years, after all), but they don't have the sharp, fluid movements and synchronization that trained dancers have. But I wouldn't change them for anything. ♥
6. Dramas and variety shows are where I see Arashi the most. I love it when they're promoting a single, of course, but I think that variety shows are their biggest selling point, just because the five of them are so much fun to watch. If it wasn't for their variety shows, I doubt they'd even have a fraction of their current popularity. Of course, I watch their dramas too, although some of them are better actors than others. But I love watching them act. ^^
7. Masculinity? Uh... ^_^;; I mean, the way they act is masculine enough, like normal guys (like all their "pink" talk on Shukudai-kun and such), but looks-wise, uh, not so much. But that's not just Arashi, that's Asia. Pretty boys are what's popular.
Hope you don't mind my paragraph-long answers, haha.

Date: 2009-12-07 05:57 am (UTC)2. I like them because they are so different from anything we have in America and their songs are so happy compared to the songs released here.
3. I prefer listening to PV's that are subbed so I can sing along with the romanized lyrics and know what I'm singing.
4. I like the upbeat tempo and positive lyrics, but I love Ohno's voice.
5. In my opinion Ohno is the best dancer in JE, but Matsujun has an incredible amount of flair and energy that shows when he dances.
6. I try to watch any and everything I can with them in it because they make me smile. My favorite shows are Arashi no Shukudai-kun and old school G no Arashi. But they are talented so many other ways, not limited to a visual medium. i.e. Ohno's art
7. I know people joke about how they act gay at times, but I do appreciate the fan service even if it's not real. Granted I've never met them in person, but there are some body and facial movements that can't be faked in regard to sexual orientation.

Date: 2009-12-07 05:59 am (UTC)1. gokusen. it was my first j-drama and i fell for jun (though i actually began watching it for matsuken) =x i like aiba now though.
2. they are just honest and down to earth. like you can simply relate to them. it cheers me up when i'm watching their shows or listening to their songs. i love their song too.
3. certain songs yes. some songs really create that sad/touching/happy feeling after knowing the lyrics translations. some songs that left me big impacts are ashita no kioku, love so sweet, be with you and beautiful days.
4. hmm they cover a lot of genres so it's kinda hard for me to say as a whole. but for the fast songs it simply raises my tension. the mellow ones are simply beautiful.
5. i can faint watching riida dance. :P he's super awesome. and i love aiba's dance too. call me biased, but even though he tends to make mistakes, i really think he's good. his footwork tends to be more complicated than others though.
6. whenever they are available i'll watch them. i love them. it's like weekly entertainment and not something i can get bored of.
7. forgive me but i think it's a kinda weird question. xP they are pretty much ordinary guys in my opinion (behaviour-wise) though honestly jun and nino tend to have floppy wrists when dancing. figure-wise, it gotta be sho's bod. =P
i hope this helps you in your project. :D

Date: 2009-12-07 06:03 am (UTC)1. How were you introduced to Arashi?
Following my obsession with manga i found '' Hana Yori Dango'' and proceeded to find out more about the handsome matsumoto Jun
2. Why do you like Arashi?
I love that they are so close and arent afraid to show their true personalities and uncool sides to us. To show us that they are regular people as well.
3. Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song? Yes. I listen to Fight Song a lot to cheer up so every time i think about the lyrics i cry.
4. What do you like about Arashi's music as a whole? [ex. the beat, the lyrics, their voices...etc] At first i liked the beat, but as i got to know them i really began to listen just for the lyrics. The lyrics is what touched my heart the most.
5. What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing? [love it or don't, why or why not?] I like it!. Its like when you see it you think ''oh thats johnny's dancing''. It's like they have whole genre of dancing that belongs to them.
6. How do you feel about Arashi's other talents? [ex. variety shows, dramas, commercials...etc] Do you watch them regularly? I LOVE their variety shows!! I watch every chance i get! I also really like their dramas. I was so awed and touched at nino's and matsujun's acting skill.
7. What do you think about Arashi's Masculinity?
The only time i think of them as masculine is when they are being perverted and looking cool sometimes. Other than that they dont really look masculine at all. More like flower boys?

Date: 2009-12-07 06:15 am (UTC)1. Well... I was into my usual anime and jrock phase. However, I decided to try and watch some dramas I've been wanting to watch. I decided to watch GOKUSEN with Matsumoto Jun who played Sawadawa Shun (or was it Shin? xDD;;;) But, I didn't really pay attention to Matsujun's character (I was into Narimiya Hiroki haha) till the end. I went: "Oh...He's pretty cute." So I decided to look up his real name, wiki-ed him and found out he was in Arashi. Then I decided to watch some videos they had and fell in love the first songs were "Beautiful Days" and "Truth." Let me tell you, "Truth" was definatly the song that made my love for them increase out of now where haha. It was a similar taste to my jrock love and caused me to have WAYYY more interest in them. And now here I am, still addicted every since and in full throttle Arashi Phase haha. Oh, and Don't know if it's needed information, but Matsjun died off as my ichiban inliterally two days. Sho and Nino became my new favorites haha. But I still got some love for him! ♥
2. I like Arashi.....cause they LOVE what they do. It's not like some people (too me) where they just do it cause they like the attention you know. I can see how passionate they are and see how different they are from others :D Each memember plays a natural role in the group and have such close friendship. Plus, they're complete dorks and are willing to show it off on TV, even though their in their late twneties/early thirties haha.
3. Yes, I do~ I'm not Japanese so, I rely on other fans (like you) to help with translations/subs haha <3333 When I first listen to a song by them, I would listen without knowing what their saying and enjoy the music. If I listened after a while, that's when I read the translated lyrics w/music once or twice :D I don't think I usually think about translated lyrics a while listening to the song, but I do get the over-all like meaning hehe :3
4. I think how well their voices sound together -nodds- It matches any style of music. I really do love everything about their music. From Sakurap to the background music and stuff :D
5. I have to say, it's been a while since I've seen dance that well together while singing haha xDD It really amazes me how much energy is need to perform :D They all end on the same part and hit each beat beautifully~ :3
6. Yes, I follow them quite well haha. I'm in full throttle of this phase haha (&&I don't want it to end lolol) It's fun seeing how well they act apart from each other. There's also different sides that show in making of whatever drama and see how they actaway from their fellow memebers~ And while on variety shows togeher, you see the close-ness of them :3
7. Uwaahh~ they all have their strength's and weaknesses :D Each memeber contributes their own way~. That's what I think, they're willing to depend on each other when needed -nodds-
Hope I was able to help! :D Sorry for the long answers hahah xD;;
&&good luck on your paper! :3

Date: 2009-12-07 06:21 am (UTC)1. i guess i found them by myself.lol. i was just searching some good songs on youtube and i kept on getting "arashi" for some videos(shukudaikun). at first i was like,"wtf, y r they keep on coming up!" so i decided to give them a chance. and i realized that a smile came up on my face as i wuz watching them for 3 hours straight. i guess thats how i got into them!
2. i like them b/c unlike other groups in JE, arashi doesnt care if they r the most famous or the best out of the others. they r unique, and i love how they show love for others. for example ohmiya. i dont think i see those butt-grabbing action while they're singing from other groups! am i rite?! x]
3. although i am full japanese, i still read the traslations. i like to use a lot of their quotes for my essays and skool work. and when i have nothing to do, i like reading them to fully understand the meaning of the song, which always are wonderful&fantastic♥
4. i like how they have variations to wut they sing. not only they have pop, they have ballades, hip hop, r&b, rock, etc. i also love hearing each of their solo parts. their balance in singing is absolutely fantastic in my opinion. but we all agree that ohno has the voice of an angel riteee!? lol.
5. i love their dance. very unique. they're not perfect and together all of the time, but thats part of who they r! they r arashi!
6. i love how they have different talents other than singing and dancing in music shows. i watch dramas all of the time. not to mention that i think they r all good actors too, especially nino. in variety shows, they show their real faces AKA their baka-ness, in dramas, we get to see their serious side. to sum it all up, i think arashi is full of talents.
7.honestly, i dont see much manly-ness in them. but i love how in shows like shukudaikun, when they act out a part thats "manly" its always funny.

Date: 2009-12-07 06:25 am (UTC)1. I had passed through their PVs (especially "Truth") a couple of times on YouTube during my NewS fangirl days (very shortlived!). Then I watched Hana Yori Dango, thought Jun was THE most amazing Japanese guy I've ever laid my eyes on (xD), and started getting into Arashi.
2. I like--no, LOVE--Arashi because of the love among all of their members. They can act like complete idiots and have fun and be comfortable with each other. Their hardworking nature is inspiring and the fact that they weren't always this popular gives them that hint of modesty that they give off at times. If I'm ever feeling stressed or irritated, I know I can just listen to their songs or watch one of their variety shows and instantly feel better. I guess Arashi's my drug now xD
3. Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song?
4. I find their music mostly upbeat and positive and the lyrics (the translated ones that I read anyway) are always profound and intelligently written. The voices are really distinctive but when they come together, I can't help but feel attracted to the music. Some duo parts (e.g. Ohno and Jun) just mesh so well together, so I like hearing those when they come out. I heard that Sho's rap lyrics are enriched with vocabulary (and thus, hard to translate xD) and I could somewhat feel that whenever I hear him rap, so that just makes me appreciate Arashi's music even more. :D It may be pop-ish but it definitely has meaning.
5. I think that all of Arashi has talent in a variety of dancing (classical, locking, freestyle, etc.) so I like it when they vary (e.g. Step and Go vs. Crazy Moon). I realize that some members stick to a certain genre more (e.g Jun with classical vs. Ohno with locking), but when it comes together, I LOVE it. Sometimes, I can note where all of their dances in different PVs or lives have the same movements, and it kind of gives me the thought of Arashi having "less orginality" but it's a very fleeting thought. Also, sometimes, they aren't always in sync, but again that's another fleeting thought. I love when Arashi dances so I don't really mind the mistakes here and there.
6. lol Would it scare you to say that I have like 10 to 15 Arashi commercials on my iPod? I love the non-music entertainment aspect of Arashi. That's how I got to know them. Variety shows capture their fun personalities and dramas display their talent in acting. Without those, I don't think I would love Arashi as much as I do now. I watch anything translated (rarely do I watch raw videos) as long as its available :D
7. Hmm...that's an interesting question. I know that because of their pop idol status, they have to dress/act a certain way to appeal to a large, mostly-female fanbase. So, at times, I can say that Arashi is not like the epitome of manlihood as we would define it, but definitely pretty manly. Sure, Jun's hand may hang off of his wrist in a girly way and all of them cross their legs at the knee, but they are still guys. It's definitely apparent on shows late shows like AnS with their hentai talk xD
I liked answering these questions! Sorry if they might be a little too analytical xD

Date: 2009-12-07 06:35 am (UTC)Anyway since I'm bored, why not xD
[First please state what country you are from] - England
1. How were you introduced to Arashi?
Jdrama. I was watching Maou and
got a crush on ohnowas intrigued by Ohno's acting so I looked him up to see what else he was in. I found out he was in the same pop group as Matsumoto who I'd seen in HYD (well to be honest, who hasn't seen HYD?). From there I was looking up random videos of them on YT and saw clips from D/G no Arashi, which are too hilarious and stupid not to become addictive amirite? From there I was hooked.2. Why do you like Arashi?
I like them because they're not a typical boy band like you would see in the west. They seem to work so hard. Even though they're all so busy they start taking on all kinds of work outside of music. It's there you can really see their wide variety of talents. Idols are originally supposed to be role models and I think their strong work ethic and the good friendship between them really sets a good example. Still the thing I like most about them is their ridiculous antics. Despite being celebrities they really can do some hilarious/embarrassing things on television just for our (and their own) amusement. This is what makes me see them as regular, down to earth guys which is probably what makes them so appealing.
3. Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song?
Lyrics are an important part of music to me so if I like a song I will read the lyrics or most likely take the time to translate it for myself (music is meant to be about personal interpretation right?). Still there are some songs I will listen to just for the sake of the music but if it's a song that tells a story or has meaningful lyrics, I think about the lyrics too.
4. What do you like about Arashi's music as a whole? [ex. the beat, the lyrics, their voices...etc]
To be honest I'm not a fan of pop music really and while I think it's good music to cheer yourself up to, I wouldn't listen to it otherwise. If it weren't for me becoming such a fan of Arashi I probably wouldn't listen to their music at all. As it is I think they're a great group so I'll support them in whatever they do, even if it's not my cup of tea. Sorry, just being honest xD...
5. What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing? [love it or don't, why or why not?]
As someone above said I don't think they're the sharpest dancers in the world but I don't think they need to be. With Arashi it seems to be all about enjoying yourself and interacting with the fans. Their dances from what I've heard are all copied by the fans at concerts and of course they would have to be a bit more simple in order to do that. So in a sense I think their dancing is an important link to their fans. Still, having said that, I think Ohno's dancing is amazing. I mean capital A amazing. He could go anywhere he wanted to with that sort of talent.
6. How do you feel about Arashi's other talents? [ex. variety shows, dramas, commercials...etc] Do you watch them regularly?
I think Arashi have an extremely broad range of talents. Aside from them all being good actors Sho has his newscasting, Nino has his magic, Ohno has his art and so on. And when you put them all together you know something funny or silly is going to happen because they're so natural with each other. That's why I watch their shows I think because they always seem so genuine it just comes across as five friends hanging out. That's why it never gets old.
7. What do you think about Arashi's Masculinity?
I'm not sure how to answer this one as it depends what you determine as 'masculine' but I do think Johnny's make their artists wear some er...interesting things...
I think their music videos and concerts do downplay their masculinity (or even maturity?) at times, what with all the rainbows and glitter and whatnot. Still I suppose that's just part of the performance and at the end of the day work is work. The fact that they are able to wear and do that sort of stuff and not feel like their 'manhood' is threatened by it speaks volumes I think.
Sorry I ended up writing a bible. Tried to be honest though xD

2. well, basically cause they're funny.
3. Do you read lyric translations? heh, no. :B
4. i like the melody of some and some of the raps.
5. What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing? honestly, i feel that Johnny's dance moves are usually jumping and spinning in an organised manner. =_____=
6. well, they're not bad. and i watch their variety show often for their humour and all. :D

Date: 2009-12-07 06:58 am (UTC)1. I wasn't introduced to Arashi directly. My friend introduced me "Nobuta wo produce" and from there I linked to other guys in JE and found Arashi.
2. Funny. Or what the fans say, dorky. But funny is a better word to use ^^
3. Most of the time, no. Unless sometimes I feel like it.
4. I like the the point that they have different genres. I dislike groups that only has 1 style or 1 genre.
5. Neutral. Sometimes their dance moves are really simple and repeated, while sometimes it gets complicated and nice.
6. I love their other talents, they're not just like other idols who only can sing or dance. The best part is they're natural in their variety shows. Some of them can even host his own art exhibition, graduate from a excellent uni and be a newscaster. Yes I do watch them regularly.
7. Er, well honestly sometimes I do wonder about that too. But based on those pink talks they have, they're still boys to me.

1. how were you introduced to arashi?
i sort of think this would be one of the more popular answers to this question (for overseas fans at least) but i got introduced to arashi through gokusen and hanadan (more of hanadan to be precise) because i got interested on who "that" guy is (a.k.a matsujun) and promptly went on a search for him, thus finding out about the existence of one of my favorite past times today, arashi.
2. why do you like arashi?
i like arashi because they are really refreshing to watch. when i first saw them, the first thing that actually caught me was how good their effects during concerts were and that they are really energetic (because the concerts were amongst the very first i saw in youtube) and i was really amazed at the moving stage. also, because they are really funny and amusing in whatever they do that i just can't help feel being amazed on how they still look cool/good despite the fact that they're doing some really stupid/baka things. the fact that they do not worry about looking bad or stupid also caught me (unlike some of the local celebrities here). and i really like their relationship with each other. considering that they have five very distinctive characters, they still get along really well and that really is very nice...
3. do you read lyric translations?
yes i do. because basically, it is the only way that i could get to understand the message of the song. whenever i listen to one of their songs, its really nice to remember the lyrics because the lyrics are also very well made and are really good and it helps me be in-tuned to the music more.
4. what do you like about arashi's music?
at first, i'd be caught by the rhythm of the song and then their voices, after reading the translations, i'd really get caught by what the song means and what messages it conveys to the listeners.
5. what are your thoughts on arashi's dancing?
the way the guys dance is really good... some critics may say that they are not the best out there, or that the steps are not that complicated to begin with, but the way these guys perform the steps are really, really good. it sort of makes the viewer fell like they are doing one fluid motion. also, i'm completely amazed on the guys' ability to memorize the steps and perform them all with only minimal mistakes...
6. how do you feel about arashi's other talents?
for someone who was introduced to arashi through one of those other talents (which is drama, of course) i really can not see arashi as a singing group only. to me, arashi is comprised of them as a singing group and all the other things they do and perform. there are lots of other things about these guys that are shown in their other shows that can not be completely conveyed during concerts or in their songs. i'm really so happy that the guys are able to present their other talents as well, since they are really talented, not only in the music genre. i do watch them regularly to the point that i am more updated with their latest shows than what is the latest happening in my country's hottest shows...
7. what do you think of arashi's masculinity?
ahmmm... hehehe... if the term masculinity refers to physically, the guys are not really buffed and can be considered relatively thin but i guess, that's how it mostly is in asia anyways. behavior-wise, the guys does sometimes act a bit effeminate (i can't use the term "gay" here since i don't see their actions as gay-ish) and are often really playful with each other but i think that's where one of their charms lie, that they can be like that but still look cool/good. so what do i think about their masculinity? they ARE masculine...

Date: 2009-12-07 07:21 am (UTC)1.hmmn.. i think it was because of boys over flower[korean ver.] Downloading their OST's, getting hooked with koreans but then i thought, i'm an anime/manga/japan lover but i haven't watch japan's ver of hana yori dango.. so i quickly search for its OST, Wish first, then thing lead to another, i really can't resist japanese.. so finally i got super hookes with arashi..
2.BEcause their funny, and their concert is so great.. i love how they get goofy around and don't project an aura of 'oh i'm a star, i'm so great' thingy,.. and i love the fanservice too.. but i'm believing that it's for real.. hehe..
3.if i really like the song and the melody is so nice.. but the 5x10 song, even without knowing what it meant, it made me cry... then knowing the meaning made me cr again...
4.the melody and the message.. it lifts up your spirit..
5.i love it~ their in synch and they're totaly hot when they sing and dance...
6.i make sure to watch it all, i dont's sleep or leave to school without watching a clip first... it's during tehir shows that i love them the most, because they are so funny and adorkable... i'll drop all my schoolwork and just watch,,
7...hmnn.. i think they're manly enough, i don't quite see any signs that they 'gay' really, because there are other guys who act way too girly than them.. when they cross their legs i think it's sexy and with them doing it. it's kinda normal.. even with they have their rabu-rabu moments, it's just like seeing two guys who are very close playing around.. they're manly enough to be a husband material..
..aah~~ i can't quite answer the last question.. ahh~ i dunno what to say... so it's like ramblings....

Date: 2009-12-07 07:25 am (UTC)2. They feel natural. There's no..forced acting of laughing and such. And of course the fact they get along makes me feel happy XD It's very relaxing to see them that's all :>/
3. I don't read translations, I listen for the Japanese since I can understand Japanese ^^;. I do think of the meaning at times, but since they're mostly pop, it's harder for me to start feeling extremely emotional. I tend to feel rather upbeat and much more hyper after listening to them.
4. (refer to #3 XD; ) I really like the fact their songs aren't heavy. It's not a bad thing, it's just there are times I just need something to relax with, to de-stress. They have the perfectly catchy songs, perfect for humming along with.
5. They're okay ^^; At times I feel it's "WOW ...I want to learn how to do that." But most of the times, I feel that there can be improvements. Though the movements do match songs fine, but there really feels like there's a lack of full out performance of skill.
6. I'm fairly impressed with their skills and do watch some occasionally. I'm always impressed with Ohno, Nino, and MatsuJun's acting, they really are quite good at it. Sho and his news are definitely interesting, though I don't watch News Zero since I really don't need to know about Japanese news (nor do I go to watch sho parts only either). Aiba's Shimura Doubutsuen is definitely one of my faves since I'm an animal lover and the fact that he likely shares this hobby is very attractive. He has a natural talent for being the joke and I love it.
7. I must admit, JE = girly boys in my mind a lot. And it still does a little, for ARASHI as well. But after seeing them more I feel that some of them (MatsuJun and Sho) are more "masculine". That is not to say the others aren't. Physically, those two appear more masculine. But mentally, it's hard to say :D It varies (tho I think Sho's losing at this XD)

1. How were you introduced to Arashi?
2007 - "Just-because-I-felt-like-it-Research/Pure research?" I had googled the name of the school that Sho promoted and the page said something like, 'Sho Sakurai of Arashi promotes the school'. So I clicked on that. Then I learned that they debuted here in Hawaii which I thought was awesome!
2. Why do you like Arashi?
Haha, isn't it obvious? They're fun(ny) and interesting - even their parents! Plus, I like their friendship and can relate to them. (Well, there's four of us though.) I also like how they act like every other person and have fun, and when it comes to work, they are serious about it. Fans love them, they love their fans ♥
3. Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song?
Yes to both :) It's a must for me to read lyrics and listen to the song when I first hear it so that I can get an idea about the song.
4. What do you like about Arashi's music as a whole? [ex. the beat, the lyrics, their voices...etc]
I like the music, beat, lyrics...everything? - the variety of it. For some reason, my like/love for a song goes up after I watched the PV. (I guess visuals are nice for me....)
5. What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing? [love it or don't, why or why not?]
Personally, I like that they're not overdoing it but not under-doing it. I think that they dance based on one's self as an individual - what one can do and not do. (I was re-watching A-RA-SHI and I knew Sho could not (and still cannot XD) do backflips and it seems that they worked around that.) :)
6. How do you feel about Arashi's other talents? [ex. variety shows, dramas, commercials...etc] Do you watch them regularly?
Love it ♥ It's nice to see that even though they are on TV, they don't worry [much] about how they act. [To the second question] I watch them when I have the time - weekends and school breaks.
7. What do you think about Arashi's Masculinity?
Say what? Haha, just joking ^^ I say it's normal. I have guy friends kind of like them - they have fun, make jokes, work hard...
Haha, I'm finally posting this after almost an hour & wow, my answers were on the shorter side (shorter than I had thought!), but I hope this helps ~ Once again, thanks for the translations and good luck on your research paper! (Oh, and if anything is unclear, just let me know.)

Date: 2009-12-07 07:33 am (UTC)1. How were you introduced to Arashi?
No one specifically introduced them to me. Pretty much I'd heard their name quite much here and there, and after Hana Yori Dango fever, I get to knew this is the group who sang the theme song and the rest history. Basically with my own curiosity lol.
2. Why do you like Arashi?
The hardest question for me. I still cant tell, but what I'd remember how I got so obsessed to get to know them back then probably because their un-idol personalities differ than idols i used to know. So, this explained I got hooked with them because of their variety shows.
3. Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song?
Yes, mostly if I really into the songs. I'm not a person who really captivated for first sight but after went through them, some of the songs I can related to them and feel how they want to convey their feeling through the songs.
4. What do you like about Arashi's music as a whole? [ex. the beat, the lyrics, their voices...etc]
Maybe because my first favourite song as a fan is Truth so, i can tell myself I like their ballad and abit rock-ish and pop combination. Not that I dislike other genre, I still can tolerate the other, like Wasurerarenai. But I care less for voices and lyrics, dont mind for them though I slightly sort of love Ohno's vocal.
5. What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing? [love it or don't, why or why not?]
I not so into dance step and all, but for me, they're pretty good. Expecially Ohno, as what I watched from Song for Me performance. But it's true though, they didnt danced in sync they're used to be coz they'd reach their late 20's already. But still, I amazed with their energy while dance, they seem very graceful to dance though they got tired or so.
6. How do you feel about Arashi's other talents? [ex. variety shows, dramas, commercials...etc] Do you watch them regularly?
Now, their variety shows are my favorite of all so mostly I watch them all if I can. Same goes with dramas even there's some reviews said its horrible and all but still I'll watch them first. As a fan, obviously I'll catch up whatever appearances their made like CM and others show them as guest. I'm very impressed with their capabilities in vary field. Like, Sho as newscaster for example. Thats amazing. But I feel like they really suit in variety shows as for me, this is the reason they manage to attract people to know them. And attract me, of course.^^
7. What do you think about Arashi's Masculinity?
LOL. I cant comment much. Honestly I didnt care much of how the look like but I lied if I'm not even a slight. I guess it's depend on people on how they look on them. I see them pretty cool on how they can take control the situations on time and how they can read the atmosphere around like interviews or concert.
Man, I babbling up there. I hope I somehow can help your research abit. Good luck! ^^

Date: 2009-12-07 07:50 am (UTC)1. I used to watch Music Station and that was when I first saw they appear for A Day in Our Life.
2. Umm in the beginning, I only know they are Jhonny's then just follow a few of their songs in MS, but again their popularity keep on rising, I can't deny them. So far their hard work had what bring them to the top and still bonded strongly as ARASHI.
3. Sometimes it's curious to know what's the meaning of the songs so I would read it a few times, and well it does help in my learning of japanese. But while listening to the song... um I wont do that I try to learn the japanese words.
4. It's always refreshing and attractive. Once you've heard it, you can't stop playing in your head kinda thing.
5. Their dancing is good, but of course there's always room for improvement.
6. Try my best to catch them up, and I really salute for all their schedule and hard work in various jobs and how they are able to balance their life... esp Ohno who still did fishing.
7. I felt they have matured since the first time i saw at MS, but I still felt as they time passed, they will still believe in theirself and keep on going together.

Date: 2009-12-07 07:54 am (UTC)1. How were you introduced to Arashi?
I was watching the television few years back and suddenly came upon HYD1 & fell in love with JUN xD
And also the theme songs of HYD totally just brought me to addiction.
2. Why do you like Arashi?
They are very different from other boy bands. Not only about their talent and friendship but also they give me a warm feeling that even though we (fans) are so far away from each other but somehow i just feel close.
3. Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song?
Yes to both :D Listening while reading the translated version gives me a deeper knowledge to the song and also know the meaning more better :D
4. What do you like about Arashi's music as a whole? [ex. the beat, the lyrics, their voices...etc]
I like how the five voices can sound so pretty together and also sound good when sung alone.
Well, personally also i like pop music.
5. What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing? [love it or don't, why or why not?]
I LOVE arashi's dancing. Although the dance that they do may not be always difficult, which, is what i like about it. The fans can dance along which brings us (fans) a step closer towards them. Instead of just watching them dance, i really really appreciate it when fans are made to follow the simple cute dance steps.
6. How do you feel about Arashi's other talents? [ex. variety shows, dramas, commercials...etc] Do you watch them regularly?
I watch most of the dramas and variety shows and i must say, the five of them stands out equally good in their own dramas. But the one that i would enjoy most is their variety shows when five of them are together, i love it a lot when the five of them behave so naturally where it is as if the camera is not rolling at all.
7. What do you think about Arashi's Masculinity?
Hmm... good enough to be idols, if you are talking about manly-"ness"

Date: 2009-12-07 07:57 am (UTC)1. How were you introduced to Arashi?
Hana Yori Dango.
2. Why do you like Arashi?
Duh--Jun is hot, and the music is often interesting.
3. Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song?
Yes. Yes. I wish I could get good translations. I get the feeling sometimes that the ones I've seen don't get that translating is an art form--you have to know how to convey the gist of what phrases mean, rather than just willy-nilly translating things. You have to know intention and context to derive the meaning. I'll stop there before I bore everyone to death.
4. What do you like about Arashi's music as a whole? [ex. the beat, the lyrics, their voices...etc]
Their upbeat music makes me happy. A lot of it is really catchy, like most good pop music is. They also draw on a lot of musical styles over several generations (50s - modern) that they don't bore me like most pop bands do. I can tell exactly where they get their influences from, and that's fun for me.
5. What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing? [love it or don't, why or why not?]
When Arashi's dancing is on (Crazy Moon), they are so on that few can touch them, but I see a lot of mistakes in their videos, where they supposedly have chances to get things right.
Here's where I see the problems: The choreography doesn't always flow well--it can be way too busy and end up looking clunky. Ohno has some interesting ideas, but they don't always transfer well to video. They need to work on spacing, timing and synchronization. Some of the members don't execute their moves right; Nino has a very bad habit of overreaching with his moves (tone it down a little, hon--you're cute as can be without overdoing it), and Sho can be stiff with his knees. And Ohno gets stuck in the background too often.
Aiba, Nino, and Ohno need to quit looking at their feet during some of the complicated moves. I know it can be really hard not to do that, but it's a huge no-no when performing.
Perhaps the problems I see derive from their being so overworked and tired that they don't get a lot of chances to rehearse (video review can weed out a lot of moves that just don't transfer well to TV), or they don't have enough time to film enough takes, I don't know, but a little more attention to detail would make their videos better.
6.(a) How do you feel about Arashi's other talents? [ex. variety shows, dramas, commercials...etc] (b) Do you watch them regularly?
a) Well, they're all incredibly funny. That's a huge talent to me.
As for other talents...
Nino is an excellent actor, Jun isn't quite as talented, but he's better than he usually gets credit for. The others aren't quite as good as these two. Sho, especially, needs to learn that what he sees of his acting in his head isn't what comes through his body and voice. He's way too good looking to be a block of wood in a role, and especially when he has one of the strongest camera senses of all of them. He usually knows where it is, and how to position himself to it. If that's not enough, the camera adores him almost as much as it does Jun; he needs to loosen up and run with that.
b) I've seen a lot of the dramas, some of the variety shoes, but that's about it.
7. What do you think about Arashi's Masculinity?
Ohno comes across as a little effeminate sometimes, but the others seem to be normal guys, as far as masculinity. Like amy alluded above, they may not seem as hypermasculine as American standards seems to demand; however, 1) not all American women want the macho guys as idealized in that culture, and 2) even American women account for things like pop idol status, and adjust accordingly. The guys in Arashi behave like normal guys and display their masculinity with a look that's young and hip, and good for them. Being a guy doesn't mean you have to be a slob or a stiff.
Look, the Beatles all dressed in matching outfits with matching haircuts for a while, but they were still guys and everyone with sense knew it. Their masculinity came through loud and clear, just like it does with Arashi.

Date: 2009-12-07 07:58 am (UTC)1. How were you introduced to Arashi?
The first time I ever heard of them was when I watched the drama Stand Up a few years ago but I didn't really start getting into them until my friend introduced me Truth.
2. Why do you like Arashi?
The music puts me in a good mood. Usually their songs are upbeat and fun but even the slower songs or the more "serious" ones still put me in a good mood. Arashi songs are never dark even if they can be very deep.
3. Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song?
I do read translations occasionally but sometimes I try to understand as I'm listening to it (but often fail lol).
4. What do you like about Arashi's music as a whole?
It's super catchy and fun to sing along to! The beat is usually really good and sometimes, the ballads are really touching. I guess what I like is that I can feel a range of emotions listening to different songs.
5. What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing?
They're not the best I've seen but they're far from the worst. Honestly, I feel like in J-pop, dancing may not be as emphasized as in, say, k-pop but the Arashi guys are still good at it ^^
6. How do you feel about Arashi's other talents? [ex. variety shows, dramas, commercials...etc] Do you watch them regularly?
I don't have much time to watch the variety shows but I love them! I really like that fans have an opportunity to see them in a different light and in different situations. I think it lessens the distance between Arashi and the fans and makes them more accessible to people.
7. What do you think about Arashi's Masculinity?
Well, by American standards they're not exactly manly but that's just fine. They're not like out there and pumping iron, drinking protein shakes and breaking things with their skulls (haha) but each of them is masculine in their own ways. They're a bit effeminate but I think their masculinity is much subtler and more attractive actually; it seems like they'd be very gentlemanly. I think it's because they don't seem pressured to act according to a certain stereotype and seem comfortable with themselves. Also, I think they still possess qualities that are classically masculine like determination and strong work ethic etc.

Date: 2009-12-07 08:11 am (UTC)1. My friend showed me a site where i could watch Japanese dramas, subbed, and she said I should watch Hana Yori Dango, as that was one of the only ones she recognized (at the time). From there I watched a few others but for the most part I Wikipedia'ed it to see the other actors (i knew Oguri Shun) and realized that a band of some sort played the theme song for both seasons (and later on, the movie). I think i probable Youtube'ed them and came up with [truth] and Kaze no Mukou E...at the time it had just been released ^^ From there I watched other PVs and a clip or two from Shukudai-kun and have been hooked ever since XDD
2.I like them because of their different personalities, their relationships with one another, their 'realness'. From the start it seems they have always tried to stay true to themselves. I love their shows and the way they present themselves...I love how they (insert: Aiba) will do anything for a laugh XD They've really grown and matured and it's amazing to see that in just the way they talk, even if they are doing stupid things at the same time XD They are incredibly cute too ^_~ love their music too~ :D (of course ^^;)
3.I do sometimes....usually if i think i know what it is, i check it out to see how accurate i was ^^; or if there is a mass amount of English I want to know if it fits (*ahem* Super Fresh *ahem*) For the most part I don't....Sometimes i wish i had when friends/co-workers ask if i know what it means and i feel supid for not knowing, but i'd like to know by myself, say with confidence that yes, i know what they are saying and not just remembering a translation ^^; Although they do help~ :D
4.The vast amount of genres :D I've always thought that anyone can find something they like because they don't stick to one genre :D It can fit any mood I'm in ^^ the beat/tune is important and yes, the voices are too XDD It has to be something that's catchy with a nice melody....i admit there are quite a few songs I don't like, but it's not their voices, it's the music itself ^^;
5.It's prety cool, if not a bit repetitive....Matsujun's is very passionate (to say the least ^^;) and Ohno has a distinct style that is easily recognizable XDD It's interesting to see the diffenrence in dancing ability, Japan vs. America....They have a style that i think is exclusively 'Japanese', if not exclusively 'Johnny's' I certainly haven't seen dancing like that here ^^;
6.They are very talented actors ^^ Once you get used to Japanese acting you can see they are on par with a number of American celebrities ^^ if not better << I love any drama they appear in, no matter how small the role I'll dl it XD and I love their commercials and watch their variety shows regularly :D
7.I thought they were pretty masculine, however my family and friends insist they are very feminine....now I don't know if that's just my preference or if I've gotten used to the femininity of Japan but I find them to be pretty manly...especially Sho XDD (which my grandma insists is the girly-ist XDD)...i think it's because the American men are very rugged and square-jawed and Sho has a wider face with a very defined jaw so I see him as the manliest...also, his muscles XDD I think it's the fact that they are so clean shaven that they look so feminine...It's hard to say what 'masculinity' is...not crying? well they have, a lot, and it's the most manly thing I've seen XDD Looks wise, probably not, but otherwise they seem like normal guys to me O_O (if not a bit touchy-feely XDD)...well not like any normal guy I've met/seen but not like girls either....
good luck with your paper and I hope this helps a bit :DD

#1 How were you introduced to Arashi?
- i knew them from a friend of mine but i wasn't really into them back then. from her too i watched matsujun dorama kindaichi and kimi wa petto. but late 2008 i found their random videos on yt and i watched it regularly and i love it.
#2 Why do you like Arashi?
- i looove them because their sooo hilarious. even they're idol, they're not afraid to look stupid (in a good way). it feels so "real" like boys-next-door type beside you can feel their hardwork and how they try their best in everything they do..
#3 Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song?
- since i dont understand japanese, i do read the lyric translation (thanks to people who very kind do translate those lyrics :D)
#4 What do you like about Arashi's music as a whole? [ex. the beat, the lyrics, their voices...etc]
-i don't like all their songs.. just couple of their songs make me interested, but mostly i like the beat of their songs with sakurap, the lyrics can pump up your heart and made your day and it sounds so positive ^^
#5 What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing? [love it or don't, why or why not?]
- i dont really pay attention to their dancing but i think their dancing is ok.. again they try their best and it's good (like in the making crazy moon PV)

1. How were you introduced to Arashi?
From Hana Yori Dango I guess. Liked "Loved so Sweet", searched for it, and learned about them.
2. Why do you like Arashi?
Really got into them after seeing their PV of "Truth". Really cool. Then their shows are awesome (dramas mostly, HYD, RnK, Smile to name a few, and their variety shows are good for laughs)
3. Do you read lyric translations? If so do you think of the translated lyrics while you listen to the song?
Sometimes. I get contented with the beat and song sometimes, I don't care much with the meaning Xb
4. What do you like about Arashi's music as a whole? [ex. the beat, the lyrics, their voices...etc]
They're up beat, and I like J-Pop. Hahaha
No really, they're cool. As my aunt said, their voices seem to become one whenever they sing, that you can't distinguish much whether do duet parts or all of them (except solos of course)
5. What are your thoughts on Arashi's dancing? [love it or don't, why or why not?]
Like it especially the "Truth" dance. ^__^
6. How do you feel about Arashi's other talents? [ex. variety shows, dramas, commercials...etc] Do you watch them regularly?
Got to know them through their other works so I have to say, hands down to them (especially in their acting/dramas)
7. What do you think about Arashi's Masculinity?
I don't see any problem about it. I mean come on, women won't flail over themselves if they saw them as gays. Need I say more? XD

Date: 2009-12-07 09:01 am (UTC)1. first noticed arashi's existence when the theme songs caught my interest while watching hanadan, but the interest just stopped at the songs. I did not go full-on into them until i saw some arashi no shukudai clips on youtube while looking for kat-tun's cartoon clips. watched those arashi clips, did more research and there was no turning back!
2. their all-roundedness: everyone has their own talent to contribute to the group.
they seem like they are genuinely happy to be in Arashi, and that they wld not have it any other way. (i mean after all, they started off as a group randomly thrown together!)
they don't try to hide who they really are, even if it is an un-idol like trait by normal consensus, eg Nino and his stinginess, ohno and his private clothes.
they are hardworking. some of their old shows are not always exactly relaxing to film. but it feels like they are just grateful to have a chance to appear on tv, and to repay this gratitude and to improve, they will do any hard jobs.
i actually liked it that they took 8-10 years to reach where they are today (their first dome concert was only in their 7/8th year). their long road to success is especially inspiring, and you admire them all the more because of that. it gives pple the belief that hard work will indeed pay off.
3. not really. i am more of a melody person. but i liked that their lyrics tend to be forward-looking or simply make sense, without trying to insert sexual annotations to excite fangirls or to be hailed as sexy and cool like some other groups.
4. admittedly, not all of them can sing well. the better singers wld be ohno (of course) and nino, but nino has some hits and misses as well. but i have to say, they actually sound good when put together - very harmonious and with more strength, its like their personal weaknesses are covered.
im not a big big big fan of all their songs, some i personally think are just normal.
but of cos they do have masterpieces - i really like Pikanchi Double, Truth, Kaze no Mukou e, Everything, One Love. And i like that their songs are very "performeable" in concerts to hype up the atmosphere, eg Carnival Night, Happiness, Hadashi no Mirai, Oh Yeah, Step & Go, Kansha Kangeki Ame Arashi, Sakura Sake, A.RA.SHI
5. dancing, hmm. hits and misses as well. some of their choreography i really like, e.g. Crazy Moon, Believe, Carnival Night, while some i feel are just mediocre. in terms of dancing talent, there is no denying ohno. the rest are pretty alright, with aiba dancing really well sometimes i feel.
however, sometimes i feel they are not very tidy in their steps, but it seems to be the same for alot of other japanese groups, so it cld be just the type of choreography in the country.
in any case, what and how they dance is never gonna affect my love for them :)
6. their variety shows are good. they never fail to crack me up. and i really like they are willing to make themselves ugly for the show's sake. and everyone has their own role, eg aiba as the boke.
ohno, nino and matsujun are exceptionally good in acting. aiba's tension is really suited for variety shows just like how nino's witty and sharp comments. i admire sho's mc and newscaster capabilities, and wld love to see him hosting more big events in the future (the upcoming best artist awards is a good start!)
this list will just go on, and is why i like them as i have stated, they all have their own talent to contribute!
7. haha, no denying they are a bunch of pretty boys. however despite their looks, i feel they are masculine or do possess certain manly traits, definitely not in how they look, but in how they think/their mentality which is portrayed thru their interviews. its just that they are willing and do not mind providing some fanservice, and perhaps their naturally close relationship gives the wrong signals as well. haha.
hopefully, i answered to the point for your queries. i hope i make sense. kinda fun doing this as well :)
all the best for your project!
