Japanese language normally doesn't have plural ending. So, the same word can be used in both singular and plural form. The original article doesn't give any plural nuance btw. What Yamakaze-san meant by "relationship with boys" is intergender relationship (that could be in the form of romance or just friendship, though the article clearly gravitates towards the earlier). ^^
