Updates on the pneumothorax news

Since my earlier post was a while ago and a lot of things have happened since then, I figured I would make a proper update post here to sort out the confusion surrounding the news after it leaked.

- The articles were taken down shortly after I posted with no explanation offered, which caused some speculation that it may have been a mistake or a rumour.
- Thanks to the tweets of Aiba's cohost on his radio show, Chika-san, fans learned firsthand that it indeed happen.
- The morning news in Japan are now reporting on the incident as well as various news sites online, and adding a few new details previously left out:

• Though he had surgery the last time he had pneumothorax in 2002, surgery will not be required this time, just a week of bedrest and observation. (Mezanyu)


• He will not be participating in the tour rehearsals taking place on June 30th and July 1st, though the other four will continue on as planned. (Yajiuma)


• They will decide what to do with all TV filming based on the progress of his recovery. Even though he's bed-bound now, he's doing well and is worrying about work. (Sponichi)


• Aiba left for the hospital after filming two episodes of Arashi ni Shiyagare, but an insider reported that there didn't seem to be anything particularly off about him. The interviews/shoots for magazines and so forth that he had lined up will all be cancelled. (Sanspo)

In addition, yuminami translated a couple of tweets by Chika-san that was made in response to someone expressing concern about overzealous fans who might attempt to go searching for the hospital that Aiba is staying at. Since I think he put it extremely well, I've asked for permission to repost her translations here:

It seems like this was a fairly minor recurrence, especially since surgery isn't required. :)

"He's bed ridden and there is nothing that he can do. He is ok. He said that he is sorry that he caused people to worry about him. Since I [Ogu-san] got the text at 5 am I couldn't sleep after that."

I'm glad to hear it's not very serious, but definitely am still wishing for his full recovery. His health means so much more than missing a concert.

Yeah its great news if surgery is not required! I'm so glad, at least he'll have time to rest and recover! I hope he doesn't stress out to much about work! He should know that true fans only want whats best for him and that his health comes first before anything! The same goes for the health of the other members too!:)

Also, I really understand what Chika-san is trying to convey here.
The last thing Aiba needs is people showing up at the hospital, interrupting the work-flow.
And in the end, since Aiba always seems to worry about being a burden to people, I guess that would only make him feel worse.

I'm really glad he doesn't need surgery though!

Amy, was the term used for the procedure done during the first incident "surgery" or is "surgery" the closest term for the Japanese word used? Given how fast Aiba recuperated the first time around, I was thinking that at most he may have had a small tube placed temporarily, or some sclerotherapy done then (both of which would explain the scar) instead of actual surgery. So this time the fact that they are just going to have him rest is such an encouraging thing.

They said surgery in the actual news clips, but honestly I'm thinking it was a very minor one to insert a chest tube since the size and shape of the scar he has corresponds with that... (I might be wrong, but I thought chest tube insertions do count as a type of surgery since an incision is made and anesthesia is required?)

Well, so good he's not so seriously ill, at least he will be able to have some rest, it's kind of sad that they are pushed so far as to fall sick, Nino says that he feels always sleepy and so many times they say they end filming at 4.00am and later and then they have to wake up early next morning, so I'm happy he doesnt needs surgery and he can rest, I'm sad because I know he hates to bother others and sure he is thinking about concerts and so on, and I hope fans let him be and dont go to make a fush at his hospital because he needs rest and they will bother other sick people staying there too.
