Crying... ABC-Z is never gonna debut. My only problem with Sexy Zone is that most of them can't even be called sexy. MAYBE the 16 and 17 year old ones can possibly be considered sexy but not the other ones. I mean how is an 11 yr old boy sexy? BUT FINALLY a group debuts with members younger than me! Plus I think it was a good idea to put a biracial boy in the group. Ugh I already have a love/hate relationship with this group.

... Nino should do another movie here in the US, just so that I can see him on big-screen.

my guess is that the name is in anticipation of when (if) they're going to make it big in the biz, w/c, if we follow the usual je pattern, is around 7-10 years from now.
maybe back in 1999, there were people who said "how can 5 scrawny boys who can easily be blown by the wind actually make a storm in the entertainment world?"

But logically, Arashi is a cool name no matter what age they appear to be at the moment. It's very Japanese and represents Japanese pride. Maybe to the Japanese people Arashi sounds 'basic', but to foreigners it sounds exotic and unique. And when you translate Arashi into english -- Tempest, Squall, Storm, Hurricane -- it STILL sounds cool.

But Sexy Zone? I don't even-- -______-

but...it's not just the name that's being contested, it's the fact that it doesn't fit the age of the members right now. in 7 years, that 11 year old will be legal, and if they do make it in the industry, then the name's just about right.
and...maybe the japanese don't attach the same kind of (not-so) hidden meanings in it. Sexy zone for them is just a name,a random english phrase, nothing more. it's the english-speaking fans who think too much of it. i mean, i still question why anyone would be a fan of kiss my feet two, but apprarently, the japanese don't find anything weird in it.

But Sexy Zone... didn't Johnny say he wants to make the groups more globalized? Debuting a bunch of 11-17-year-olds with an english name like that (let's say he wants to target the international crowd) isn't gonna do them any favours xD

last year, arashi made approximately $200 million in the music sector alone (music releases + concerts). if you count in tv shows and endorsements,it'll be bigger. i don't think the international fandom can match that kind of sales, however much we'd like to think we can. and long after we get tired of boybands (actually most of the world has), the japanese fans will continue to give mr. kitagawa their money. and to japanese fans, sexy zone could just be another english name of another johnnys group.

Sexy Zone can only be a proper name for a group with hopes of being popular outside of Japan if it were a Chippendales type of group or if their main point was that of being overtly sexy. As of the moment, the 2 or 3 youngest can only be sexy to pedophiles. And if their goal is to grow into their name and be popular 7-10 years in the future, I hope they have the patience and perseverance that Arashi had to be to hold on during long years of being so-so in terms of popularity. Remember that Arashi's senpais had very popular runs early after debut, while they got very very popular 7-8 years after debut. I think that JE is trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice, which is very difficult to do.

i think all debuting japanese groups have hopes of making it big abroad, but reality is different. reality is still the japanese market, and i think the mainstream japanese fans will only think of it as simply a name. someone pointed out that maybe in japan, "arashi" is basic, but to foreigners, it sounds exotic. with sexy zone, it's the other way around. we, who speak english, see all sorts of negative things in it especially when you think of the members' current age. but for the japanese, it could be exotic. again, kissmyfeettwo as a nice example of this.

but did you guys know that the name usually stakes in if someone or a group is gonna be famous or not..

like "madona", "elvis"...and such..

and whaddya know "smap" and "arashi" fits the criteria...

and just an off question, does anybody know why arashi is the only johnnys group with a very VERY japanese name?

If the group stays in Japan, then the name Sexy Zone wouldn't really be of that importance but I have read that JE plans to sell the group worldwide, as the deliberate choosing of a half-German member. I do hope they succeed as the members seem good looking and were supposedly chosen for their talents in singing and dancing. Unfortunately, it will be difficult for a group with this name to be taken seriously in the first 3 three years or more in the English-speaking JE fandom.

johnny kitagawa is fluent in english, right? the fact that he's the one naming his groups and naming them ridiculously (to english-speakers, at least) already gives me cause to suspect that all his "making it worldwide" statements will remain statements. international fandom is fickle. new kids on the block,backstreetboys,nsync...did any of them celebrate 10th anniversary&claim relevance in showbusiness? smap's on their 20th and they're still selling 300k+ of their album, they have endorsements, movies, tv shows.

sexy zone won't concentrate abroad,i'm quite sure of this, not if they want to bring in the big money.

Those Sexy Zone boys are so young ^^'. The youngest one is 11, right? Gosh, debuting at 11 ^^'. Ach well, wishing them all the best though. Hope to hear a lot from them in the future.
