Ok, so I've decided that maybe i know enough japanese now to translate stuff, especially easy arashi songs! So here goes: NATSU NO NAMAE!! No one that I know has translated this it and I love this song so hard so here goes:

That Name from Summer (1)

The wind is blowing just like that one time,
Your smiling face will never come back.
I thought that we would definitely be together from now on, but
That will never happen.

Yesterday, you packed only your favorite clothes
And left wearing the sneakers that we bought together*

Count the names of summer, standing in a pool staring at the waves.
My friend, dear friend. It was thought that we would be together.
Nodding, I gazed at your profile. Softly, we our fingers touched.
My friend, dear friend. We kissed shyly.

The bus announced its departure. Time has passed.
An extra ticket remains in my right hand.
I heard a voice calling my name.
I call your number, but only a small voice answers(2).

There is only darkness right before my eyes, but I probably can't return back to the light.
Bus step. Ascending feet. Towards the future I go.

*Please tell me the name from that summer. The parting on the bridge that we walked on.
My friend, dear friend. I have given up on being with you.
I open the window and scream out your name with a sound that has been building up in my chest.
My friend, dear friend. With tears welling up in my eyes I look down at the town.

If I stop now, I smell the fragrance of grass.
Seasons pass, but I am still inexperienced.
Pursue the entwining thread that is memory.
Carrying the scenery in my mind, I can sense your fragrance.
Burdened by the light, I can only face the darkness (3)
Why does my heart hurt?(4)
I bear it, covered in sweat.
Like that time, once again, the wind is blowing.

Even if I have let you go, I will not forget the day we met.
Too few, the names of summer.
You haven't forgotten, have you?

*Please tell me the name from that summer. The parting on the bridge that we walked on.
My friend, dear friend. I have give up on getting closer to you.
I open the window and scream out your name with a sound that has been building up in my chest.
My friend, dear friend. With tears welling up in my eyes I look down at the town.

Explainations etc.
Well, I have taken a lot of liberties with the translation because the one thing I hate is when translations sound weird and wooden like a direct translation. So I took the fundamental meaning of the words and converted them into something that actual english speaking people would say. Since i'm not super duper fluent, there may be mistakes, so please tell me ok?

(1) The title is a little hard to translate. Literally, it means Summer's Name or Name of Summer, but what I think Arashi is talking about is names that they recall from summer because they are "counting" them. So I think that they are recalling (counting) all the names of the people they met during summer and there are "too few" because of this one girl who left.

*Thank you [livejournal.com profile] mikan_purin_ame! あたしまだ下手だけど、どうもすいません。
(2) See, this could be a small voice answers or he calls her using a small voice. I like the first one better. I'm not 100% sure but the small voice may be the voice mail or something. At anyrate, this girl sure isn't too keen on getting into any member of Arashi's pants.
(3) Extended metaphor! Remember how they were "facing the darkness" that is the future that starts with the bus departure? Well Sho uses this really nifty ambiguity which can mean both that the light is behind him so he can only face the shadow OR that he is burdened by the light and is looking down at the darkness of his shadow. Oh Sho-kun, your way with words. <3
(4) Literally, he says why is it hot in my heart? But I see this mistranslation a lot. It's translated correctly technically but the meaning just doesn't get through in english. What he means is what is this discomfort/pain, so I translated it accordingly.

Phew...お疲れさまでした。Please tell me what you think/if you want me to do more of these.

EDIT: Corrected some engrish and fixed some translation. Please tell me what you think and thanks to those who already did! And if you know japanese please by all means tell me wether I suck or not, because if I do then I'll start writing all the kanji that I should know on my arashi flashcards (yes they exist and i own them!) and review them until i'm better!
EDIT2: Corrected things further and made things flow smoother. Thanks for all your great comments!

Wow, that's pretty awesome! I do believe this is the first translation of a ONE song I've seen, too, so yay for you! :3 (Okay Sakura Sake doesn't count, it was a single.)

And this does give the song a lot more meaning for me, so thanks very much for taking the time to do this.

I actually went to the local Japanese market to LOOK for the products they endorse (Pino, O'Zack, Puchi, etc). I'm such a brainwashed fangirl. XD~

BUT they didn't have any of them!! I was sad. So sad. ;__; About the only thing I can buy that they tell me to is Coke. Lame~

Great translation. Many times when I see their songs translated it is the literal version and it def takes away from the beauty of their songs. I really like the way you translated it, thanks!

am i the only one crying because of this?

That's so beautiful! Thank-you for translating this! It's okay if you took some liberties. I agree that songs especially end up sounding wooden when directly translated. It's such a beautiful song, that would be a shame! ;_;

You ever want your mind to reel, just attempt to use Babel Fish to translate. >.- It'll really mess up your mind. I use it anyway, though, since my japanese is so limited. LOL

Thank-you again!
