So we all know the attention Ohno Satoshi is getting from the media and public right now.
In my opinion, these tabloids are just picking on him because of this.
It's up to your own discretion if you believe this or not but...
Anyways, here's the story:

I was on the train with my sister and we were looking at the ads.
She pointed out a story with big letters that said "ARASHI Leader Ohno Satoshi
Smoking Marijuana." I couldn't really read all of it, but those words were loud and clear.
The magazine itself comes out tomorrow with a picture of
him apparently "smoking." We all won't know for sure until we actually see
the picture. IFFFF (if if if if if) this story is true, we all know what kinds of consequences
leader will receive.

Apparently (I think) the source is a female who saw him inhaling marijuana at a Karaoke place in Shibuya.

I mean even just walking down the streets in Akihabara, there are prominent displays of big breasted girls, nakedness and eroticism. Japanese teenagers younger than Chinen are no strangers to the idea of sexuality--it's treated so very casually in Japan as opposed to the West.

And Chinen is how old? He's not five, anyway. If you feel that it's bad for his "education", you might want to move him to the Bible belt in America.

There's no way it can be proven that he's smoked marijuana even with a picture. Marijuana can't be discerned from tobacco unless the picture was very explicit--marijuana and tobacco can both be smoked the same way, be it pipe or rolling papers. They'd have to seriously photograph the marijuana, photograph him rolling it, and then photograph him smoking it to prove that he didn't have a joint of tobacco.

Then again, he could get drug tested. I don't want to think about what that might bring up.

that's what i immediately thought too. it could just be a cigarette or a tobacco. it's known that ohno smokes, and at a karaoke bar it's pretty, overly normal to smoke.

if this gets bigger, johnny should clear it out and prove the tabloids they're wrong. but i'm worried ohno is only 40kg now and he's just so thin.

This is rubbish for poor O-Chan... Just when he's starting to stand out in his own right, there's always the crappy tabloids to bring someone down. I hope it doesn't have any negative effects for him but depending on how much creed is given to the story, the Japanese public can be a little unforgiving when it comes to scandels.

But honestly, I don't think this is true.

For one, as people have pointed out many, many times during other scandals, Johnny and Associates control the market. The whole concern is HUGE, they've got hundreds of connections and tons of money and if there was evidence for one of their artists commiting a major crime, they'd use their power, their connections and their money to make sure that the thing stayed out of the media, so we'd never hear anything of it. (The only thing they don't seem to be able to control is police reports - at least that's the only thing I can imagine why they didn't stop the scandal around SMAP's Goro when he was caught driving drunk and Uchi's drunk scandal.)

The other thing is - marijuana of all things? A drug that calms you down, makes you spaced out and giggly, makes your reflexes slower and your coordination worse? For a Japanese idol who has to be on so much at all times, I can't imagine that would be the drug of choice! (Especially since they can get similar effects by drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes, both of which is legal and wouldn't make anyone bat an eyelid.)
If I had to guess an illegal drug for the JE guys, I'd say cocaine - it wakes you up, it makes your brain's reaction time faster, it helps you perform your duties even when you're battling with lack of sleep and it makes you creative (before it destroys your brain, at least). It's the drug that seems to be most often used by people in highly demanding jobs and I wouldn't be surprised at all if all of the over-age guys in JE had at least tried it once. (Of course we can only hope that they'd be smart enough to stay away from the stuff in the long run...)

I think we're not just battling with the assumption that Ohno has smoked marijuana but also the associated assumption that somehow this is a long-term habit. It could easily have been a one-time affair, fun thing to try out (maybe seeming more interesting when one is drunk, if Ohno was drunk then) if Ohno had really consumed marijuana. So I don't think your argument regarding marijuana being a bad choice of drug for consumption is as strong as it seems.

Secondly, I don't think it's very polite too, to drag in other JE artistes and somehow create a distraction from Ohno's case by attempting to shift the focus onto other people (who may be less loved, and thus less likely to be defended as aggressively, in an Arashi community). Unless you are suggesting that Ohno may be doing cocaine instead, because cocaine seems more likely a choice of drugs, then I would still wish that you had kept it to being only about Ohno. It would at least be more relevant to the argument you are making.

Obviously we'd like to think we know Satoshi Ohno well enough to assume things about his behavior, but sadly we don't. Nor do we know what it's like to be a Japanese idol, though I'm sure none of us are in the dark about how stressful it must be.

Logically speaking, after being scandal free for nearly 10 years it seems unlikely that a memeber of Arashi would suddenly slip.

But I really hope for Ohno, and the other members, that this is untrue and will pass without too much of a struggle.

I believe in Ohno, but if it turns out to be true I will still believe in him. Everyone makes mistakes...
